Marcel Casellas i Navinés
Esplugues de Llobregat -1954-
Marcel is a double-bass player, composer and pedagogue-teacher in traditional music and hybrid-root music.
He worked as interpreter, arranger and composer in the Mesclat group. He recorded three CD’s: Mesclat-2002-, Manilla –2004– and Crema Catalana –2007–.
He was the interpreter, the composer and the director of Marcel Casellas and the “La Principal de la Nit So Insistent”. Marcel recorded and carried out the musical production of the following CD’s: L’Envelat Violeta (2004), El cremallera de Núria (2006) and El Club del BGI (2008).
He works as a professor of impromptu performance and in the hybrid-root music group at the “Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya” (ESMUC) (Music College of Catalonia) since 2003.
Marcel had been the principal of the “Aula de Musica Tradicional i Popular de la Generaliat de Catalunya”(School of Traditional and Popular Music of the Goverment of Catalonia) from1992 until 2003.
Marcel has developed and carried out several speculative musical projects based on light music of traditional roots such as: Transardània, Casellas-Sextet-Folk, L’Orquestra dels Sòns Essencials, Estramp jaç.
He has composed soundtracks for several movies, among them: Germanes de sang (Blood sisters)…and musical theatre plays such as: El Viatge, with Quim Lecina, Vides de Picasso, Eròtic Giust…
Marcel has played with numerous groups and he has recorded various CD’s such as: l’Orquestrina Galana , l’Orquestra del programa de TV3 Bojos pel Ball, Quintet Fibonacci, Portàtil FM, De Calaix and he has also played with some singers, for instance: Marina Rosell, Joan Isaac, Miquel Pujadó, Rah-mon Roma and Mirna among others.
Marcel has composed some chamber plays in several formats: “La Merceria” 16 pieces for piano, “Rapsòdia per a Tres Quartants i Cobla”, the ballet “La Platja del Far” among others. The majority of these plays have been premiered and recorded in CD’s.
In addition, he has composed numerous plays for popular dances, for example: Farandola de Sant Celoni, Ball Pla de Sant Esteve, Ball de Gegants de l’Agrupació de Geganters de Catalunya, Ball de Nans d’Esplugues among others.
